Snow and Sunshine

Last night it started snowing. By the time I went to bed there was about 1-2 inches on the ground, and was starting to freeze. As I left my cozy bed, kitty and apartment at 7:15am, I found that my little hilly side road to my apartment had also frozen. As I made my way onto the main roads, my little Honda mastered the snow gracefully and comfortably. The freeways were fine, but my work is in the foothills and here there is much more snow. The exit had not been salted and neither had been the roads around my work. Luckily there was barely anyone near the Microsoft campus (full-time employees don't roll in until 10ish) so I took my time. As soon as the sun rose around 7:45am I realized there wasn't a cloud in the sky. So now I am trapped in my office all day, with snow on the ground and a beautiful blue sky. Luckily, I am surronded by 2 windows, so I spend (a lot of) my time gazing up the hills and on the snow burdened trees.

Greek Beaches

Last night, Shaunna and I attended the yoga class at our local 24 hour Fitness. At the end of the class we do a deep breathing technique that relaxs your mind, body and spirit (I am not sure of the proper yoga name for it). We were supposed to imagine ourselves laying on a beach with the sand sculpted perfectly underneath our bodies. Immediately my mind flashed back to the beaches in Lefkada (on the west coast of Greece) where my girlfriends I am took a weekend trip and had the entire beach to ourselves. With the white sands, the sheer cliffs and the clear blue water, my mind and spirit were tranquil. In my mind Shaunna was laying next to me, both of us relaxed and warm, with no thoughts, no worries and only the clear Ioanian Sea out before us.

Happy Birthday!

HAPPY 23RD BIRTHDAY TO ME!!

I came into work to find my desk littered in work confetti (ie the white paper circles from the 3 hole punch), candy littered the desk, and a big happy birthday sign strung across the top. While I have to shake my booty every time I get up to brush off the confetti, I enjoyed it. My boss took me out to thai food for lunch and tonight Jed is going to take me to sushi dinner!

Turning 23

Tomorrow I turn twenty three years old. I have been doing a lot of thinking lately about my life and things that I have accomplished, things I have not accomplished, and things I have yet to accomplish. There is a large amount in each of those categories, but I think that is okay. While I may complain about turning so old, most of my closest friends are a few years older than me already, so they encourage me to keep truckin along and strive for the great things they have already achieved.

Desiderata

Go placidly amid the noise and the haste,
and remember what peace there may be in silence.

As far as possible, without surrender,
be on good terms with all persons.
Speak your truth quietly and clearly;
and listen to others,
even to the dull and the ignorant;
they too have their story.
Avoid loud and aggressive persons;
they are vexatious to the spirit.

If you compare yourself with others,
you may become vain or bitter,
for always there will be greater and lesser persons than yourself.
Enjoy your achievements as well as your plans.
Keep interested in your own career, however humble;
it is a real possession in the changing fortunes of time.

Exercise caution in your business affairs,
for the world is full of trickery.
But let this not blind you to what virtue there is;
many persons strive for high ideals,
and everywhere life is full of heroism.

Be yourself. Especially do not feign affection.
Neither be cynical about love,
for in the face of all aridity and disenchantment,
it is as perennial as the grass.

Take kindly the counsel of the years,
gracefully surrendering the things of youth.
Nurture strength of spirit to shield you in sudden misfortune.
But do not distress yourself with dark imaginings.
Many fears are born of fatigue and loneliness.

Beyond a wholesome discipline,
be gentle with yourself.
You are a child of the universe
no less than the trees and the stars;
you have a right to be here.
And whether or not it is clear to you,
no doubt the universe is unfolding as it should.

Therefore be at peace with God,
whatever you conceive Him to be.
And whatever your labors and aspirations,
in the noisy confusion of life,
keep peace in your soul.

With all its sham, drudgery, and broken dreams,
it is still a beautiful world.
Be cheerful. Strive to be happy.

Thanksgiving Dinner!

This Saturday, January 12th, Shaunna and I are having Thanksgiving Dinner at our apartment. Shaunna missed Thanksgiving while she was in Egypt and so we decided to have everyone come over to our apartment for a welcome back/Thanksgiving celebration.

In addition, my birthday is on Wednesday, so it will be a Thanksgiving/Birthday celebration. Shaunna and I are baking a turkey and everyone is bringing something to share. So far, 9 people have confirmed and are all bringing their boyfriend/girlfriend/husband/wife.

I fear that my Thanksgiving/Birthday celebration has become a couples party. With me being the only single.
